 Llanfair Slate Caverns 14.6 miles 01766780247 (route map) The caverns have stayed as the miners left them, built over 100 years ago. Look for scars in the rock made by the miners tools. This is a self guided tour, so grab you torch and helmet and start your journey deep through the depths of the mountain. Enter cavern one with an impressive overhead entrance, the last sunlight to stream in before descending Jacobs Ladder. Wander through the tunnels and chambers and as you emerge from the caverns you face the breathtaking view of Cardigan Bay.

The National Slate Museum 27.2 miles 03001112333  (route map) Built in the shadow of Elidir mountain, the site of the vast Dinorwig quarry. Travel into the past of an industry and way of life that has chiselled itself into the very being of this country. Designed to look like the quarry-men have just put their tools down and left the courtyard for home. There are lots of talks and demonstrations. A full day of enjoyment and education awaits set in dramatically beautiful landscape on the shores of Llyn Padarn, and at the terminus of the Llanberis Lake Railway. There is ample parking, a gift shop, cafe, Children's play area, Family trails and is wheelchair friendly in most parts of the museum.

Electric Mountain 8.1 miles 01286870636 (route map) An amazing feat of engineering, a power station hidden inside a mountain. Water, gravity and man's ingenuity work together to produce electricity. The largest man made cavern in Europe, 180 metres long, 25 metres wide and 60 metres deep, it could happily house St Paul's Cathedral. All aboard the Electric Mountain bus, hard hats at the ready as you begin the descent through the labyrinth of tunnels to the heart of Elidir Mountain where you will see secret sights you will be unlikely to forget.
